Plastic Harem

Ten years ago the Dutch-Egyptian conceptual artist Tarik Sadouma (1979) moved from Amsterdam to Cairo with the intention of producing art in the land of his father. In search of an audience he ended up directing local commercials and music video's. As a young businessman he developed a deep understanding of modern day Arabic culture. So when the Egyptian revolution started he did not have much faith in it. Sadouma sets out on a journey that copies the careers of these stars of the temporary Arabic pop culture. With the help of local Egyptian sculptors he produces life-size, nightmarish female sculptures and tries to find a place for these controversial works in the glittering towers of the Middle East. They meet the famous plastic surgeon Hratch Saghbazarian, the influential female journalist Nidal al 　　Ahmedieh and finally end up in Dubai with the singing sheikh Abdallah Bilkhair. Will he manage to sell his work and in doing so prove the point he wants to make about the Middle East?
