Before bank employee J. Pinkham Whinney leaves on a cross-country vacation with his wife Flora, his co-worker Ferguson deposits $50,000 in embezzled money in Whinney's suitcase, planning to recover it after Whinney leaves New York. Flora, however, has placed a newspaper ad for a couple to travel with the Whinneys, and George Edwards and Gracie Devore, who respond to the ad, quickly derail the Whinneys' travel plans, making it impossible for Ferguson to locate them. Unaware that they are traveling with stolen money and are wanted by the police, the Whinneys are made miserable by the constant, sometimes life-threatening interference of George and Gracie. After the group is robbed outside of Nuggetsville, Nevada, Whinney wires his bank for money, and Ferguson and a pair of bank detectives descend on Nuggetsville. "Honest" John Hoxley, Nuggetsville's bumbling sheriff, arrests Whinney on Ferguson's instigation but is unable to locate the money because Mrs. K. Rumford, proprietress of the Whinneys' hotel, has discovered it in the suitcase and has left town with it. All ends well, however, when Mrs. Rumford, who was merely taking the money to the police, returns with evidence that Ferguson is the embezzler. George and Gracie find another ride to California, and the Whinneys are left to enjoy the balance of their vacation in peace.
